He said he is using VGM Music Maker for the sound, so since he is using the VGM format, I made this quick VGM and showed it to him, and he seemed to like it. However, the story of Infinos Gaiden recycles the story of Infinos 2, and Playism did do the English translation for that.I approached the guy working on the port on Twitter, and asked him if he needed help porting the sound. We didn't use any service like that for this game. Did you use something like this or produce it in house? While many games at Comiket now have both English and Japanese language options, most companies use a service, like Playism, to translate the game. And because none of the game contents need to be in Japanese specifically, having it in English lets people outside of Japan play too. So when the player starts the game and sees the scrolling English text, the purpose is to get them to think, "This is like an arcade game". And English is pretty common in the introduction demo and ending credits, not just for shooting games, but arcade games too. That's because we wanted to make an arcade style game. Given that the majority of people who would buy the game at Comiket cannot read English, this is an interesting choice. The opening credits of Infinos Gaiden is entirely in English – there’s no Japanese. What plans does the circle have for the future?īecause we're still in a trial and error phase, our goal for the time being is simply to continue to make games and release them in the future. Around that lies the strength of doujin games, and even in the future we plan to move forward designing things we thought we'd want to make. I guess I could say that we are shaping our favorite games that we imagine. We don't really have any specific process. How does your circle decide the games it designs? While we have never made a game together yet, we ask each other’s opinion, and when something we're working on is nearing completion the two of us play test the game and make any final adjustments. Up until now, the games we have released have been the Infinos series, the vertical scroller Battle Crust, and the training RPG Disc Creatures. ![]() I'm making the shooting games, and my brother is making RPGs. As for the number of members, there's two of us: me and my older brother. This Circle began with the release of Infinos, which was free, in 2013. So, the music in this game has become the element that produces both realism and tension in the game.Ĭan you tell me a little about your circle? For example, how long have you existed, where are you located, how many members, their roles, what games you've made? Because of this, it is necessary to convey the feeling of the story and the world to the players through its graphics and music. I didn't put any letters or demo in the middle of the stages. If this game didn't have background music, for example, I don't think I could release it.Ĭan you tell us anything about the role the BGM plays in this game? Music is one of the compositional pillars of a game. ![]() How important do you think music is to games?Īs I said before, a game needs balance between gameplay, graphics, background music, and sound effects. A lot of times developers focus on graphics or gameplay, but a good soundtrack is really essential to the success of a small demo like this one. I’m interested in hearing about the music for the game. Where did you apply these to Infinos Gaiden? ![]() A "game" is the collective sum of all of these elements. What I mean by game balance is that none of the elements that comprise a game - the gameplay, graphics, background music, and sound effects - are inferior to the others, or that when gathered together none of them stick out. I think that depends on the person but, for me, overall balance is important. What elements do you think are necessary for a good game? Because it's necessary in the first stages of production to also design non-content aspects of the game, like the game system and opening demo, it takes a bit longer than simply designing stages. ![]() How long did it take you to develop the demo of Infinos Gaiden? I think that the latest version will be more finely tuned, but in terms of the overall engine and gameplay it's pretty much complete. The game I played was obviously a demo, so what ideas do you plan to implement for the finished version of the game? I also happen to prefer those style of games myself. In what ways did this game or similar ones, like R-Type, influence Infinos Gaiden? Earlier I mentioned that the game reminds me of Gradius.

The tragedy was that the baby was thrown out with the bathwater: there had always been a grain of truth in Cooke’s insights. ![]() Whilst the book never found acceptance in mainstream musicology, it still enjoys a ghostly after-life in philosophical aesthetics as a convenient punching-bag, full of easily knocked-down straw-man arguments about musical emotion. Superficially, my book might remind you of Deryck Cooke’s 1959 effort, The Language of Music, the first extended essay at a cross-historical typology of musical emotions. It presents a history of basic and complex emotions in music from Gregorian chant circa 1000 through the great Western composers (Hildegard of Bingen, Machaut, Josquin, Monteverdi, Bach to Boulez), including contemporary popular music and jazz (Radiohead, Muddy Waters, video-game music), in dialogue with the great philosophers of emotion (Augustine, Aquinas, Descartes, Spinoza), and framed by an original theory of how musical emotion works. As with the representation of human faces, the emotional character of musical material evolves, reflecting the mindsets, emotional communities and emotives of different historical periods. ![]() Similarly, the funk groove in Beyoncé’s ‘ Crazy in Love’ enacts what music theorists call a ‘participatory’ rhythm, which turns out to be typical of a lot of love music (it’s even found, once you translate between styles, in the Aria from Bach’s Goldberg Variations). The best-known examples of such emotional icons in music are Adele’s much noted appoggiaturas (what Renaissance music called ‘ pianti’ ) the shark theme in Jaws, a figure of fear which also crops up in Schubert and Bruckner or the joyful trumpet fanfares in much Baroque music, such as the opening of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio. Musical language has an emotional character by analogy to, say, the expressions in the faces of Giotto’s angels or Michelangelo’s sculptures. The glory of music studies – compared even with literary studies – is music’s spectacularly technical, systematic, and precise language, notated in scores which have survived many hundreds of years. My hunch was that you could do this from the perspective of the musical language itself, what musicology calls ‘style’. ![]() To write a history of emotion, you would surely need to interview listeners who are no longer alive. Juslin contended that ‘historical changes in expression are mostly beyond the scope of a psychological analysis because we cannot collect empirical data from events that occurred in the distant past’ (p. The showstopper seemed to be an objection eloquently raised by another recent book, Patrik Juslin’s excellent Musical Emotions Explained (Oxford University Press, 2019). It’s such an alluring proposition, why had nobody ever done it? About ten years ago, when I began sketching the book which has just been published ( A History of Emotion in Western Music: A Thousand Years from Chant to Pop, Oxford University Press, 2020), I never imagined that such a project was feasible. I wanted to read a book which recounted the musical history of love of nostalgia, joy, wonder, jealousy, boredom, hope, rage, disgust, melancholy, depression, panic. They say you should write the book you want to read. By Michael Spitzer, University of Liverpool ![]() ![]() These elements extol human emotions and promote superstitions about mermaids who can grant wishes. The movie contains mixed Romantic and pagan elements, however. With no sexuality, violence or strong language and with some biblical and moral values of friendship and self-sacrifice, AQUAMARINE is mostly for older children and young teenagers. It feels like a teenage re-hashing of the Tom Hanks/Darryl Hannah movie, SPLASH, or a live-action remake of Disney’s THE LITTLE MERMAID. It lacks real originality, direction and a good script. What do they want? They want Hailey’s mom, a marine biologist, to decide not to move to Australia.ĪQUAMARINE is not a great movie. If Hailey and Claire will help her, she will grant them a wish. She has three days to get a guy to tell her that he loves her. Aquamarine tells the girls that, in order to get out of her arranged marriage, she must convince her father that true love exists. But for all the narrative awkwardness and abuses heaped on Cecilia, the film comes up with a terrific ending, underlining the importance of the girls' friendship (including their new friendship with Aqua) over romance.AQUAMARINE, a family movie, follows Hailey and Claire, two 12-year-olds and best friends whose lives are forever changed when, after a huge storm, they find Aquamarine, a mermaid trapped in their beach club’s pool. And true, Aqua is not so charming as the human girls, especially Roberts as Claire, who is convincing and adorable. True, the film leans too heavily on its "villain," the wealthy Cecilia (Arielle Kebble), to amp up the dramatic tension (as she competes for Ray's attention by lying and cheating). As well, Aqua's "otherness" is marked by her naïve childishness, combined with physical oddities (fingernails that change color to show her emotions, live starfish she wears as earrings and who whisper in her ear that she's "smart" and "beautiful"), and a sensual maturity (Ray is quite smitten as soon as he sees her, though perplexed by her strange behavior). ![]() The movie adapts mermaid rules from Splash (Aqua can grow legs during the day, but her fishtail comes back at sundown or if her legs get wet) in order to set up absurd situations. The girls and mermaid cut a deal: if, in three days, Aqua can get Ray to say he loves her, she avoids a loveless wedding and will grant the girls a wish. Determined to prove the existence of love (and so, avoid her father's plans), Aquamarine pursues Raymond ( Jake McDorman, who shows a gift for physical comedy and making faces), the very pretty lifeguard on whom Hailey has a crush. This would be Aquamarine ( Sara Paxton), running away from an arranged marriage. And two, they find a mermaid in a swimming pool. ![]() They're also distracted by two major developments: one, Hailey's mother has a new job in Australia, which means the girls will be split up at summer's end. They've read the magazines and memorized the instructions on how to attract a boy, but they're also daunted by their rivals, slightly older girls in makeup and bikinis. Claire ( Emma Roberts), who lives at a small Florida resort with her grandparents, and Hailey (pop singer Joanna "JoJo" Levesque) are discovering the joys of boys, or at least the idea of boys. AQUAMARINE focuses on two smart, mostly sensible 13-year-olds at the end of their last summer together. ![]() Go to the installation folder of Fabrik Ultimate Backup.
